After performing an in-depth competitor analysis, I found that there were a number of similar apps that provide the same functionality, but they all offer very complex and buggy solutions. I was tasked with creating a great user centric oriented experience, directed at meeting the user expectations by allowing them to easily create, share and count down to their moments.
My research phases was focused on further flushing out the competitor matrix to gain insights on how to differentiate the Countdown product from all the others. Outlining the core attributes of the customer journey map allowed me to plan and organize the user stories before testing.
Epics are stories that provide an overview of the features. Creating Epics helped me think through my design decisions in effort to provide a useful user experience. Within the Epics, user stories were created to provide detailed descriptions of what the user can do; create, edit, view, share and delete their events
Design stories:
In order to test the ideas and hypotheses, I developed some user personas to understand the possible scenarios and to see which functions could be useful.
Task flows helped me to think through the overall system design. Understanding how the touch points were related to the user tasks was key in keeping the process as simple as possible.
My next step was to visualize the user task flow. I started with some quick sketches and continued with creating high-fidelity mockups. Since I was going to use the mockups for user validation, I used as much real data as possible.
To validate my design assumptions, I created a series of multi-variant A/B tests to see which components, messaging and interaction design provided the best results.
Once I had all of the optimization data in, it was time to create the visual design. Sketch was used to design out the views for both Android and IOS using a wide range of device resolutions to ensure a pixel perfect user experience.
To differentiate the Countdown app from all of the other competitors, the user experience had to be fun to use. I designed custom mobile gestures to evaluate the users overall sense of delight and excitement as they interacted with the app.
